Minnesota Is Testing a Model To Add More Civility to Politics

“Out with the racists, in with the feminists!” is the slogan of a new political party in Denmark. The Feministik Initiativ is “a new intersectional feminist party in Denmark.” It won 3,258 votes in the regional election. The party hopes to counter anti-immigrant sentiment, as well as fight for issues like equal pay and zero employment discrimination.

The strategy has been particularly effective in countries with state-imposed silence around past atrocities, such as Spain, where more than 9,000 bodies have been exhumed since 2000.

The Viequense Women’s Alliance combines the knowledge from community youth and experienced advocacy mentors to develop community leaders who are educated on current issues and technology. Women of all ages join together to advocate for their human rights.

Minnesota’s Civility Caucus brings Democrats and Republicans together for monthly sessions where they learn more about each other and their respective districts. Members say having opportunities to get to know their fellow lawmakers helps create a better foundation for working together. At least one bill has been cosponsored by members of the caucus from opposite parties.

Capitalizing on broad political-organizing pushes across the U.S., the United Farm Workers (UFW) union signed its first contract in New York, offering significant protections to about 150 orchard workers.

A scholarship endowment from the U.S. Agency of International Development supports the American University of Afghanistan, which provides courses to Afghan women who are not allowed to pursue education in their home country. In all, 208 scholarships have been awarded, including funds for 120 women to relocate and attend college in person, but the future of the program is uncertain due to federal cuts to USAID’s programs.
