More girls, African-Americans enroll in AP computer science. Why that matters.

The United States spends more than any other large, industrialized nation on education. The education system is slowly being reformed through tester groups in charter schools, but it takes a lot of time and money to decide if these programs work.

Somali youth that immigrate to the United States can struggle to find some direction toward a career and what it means to be on a team. La Joog, a nonprofit based in Minneapolis, launched a 4-H program designed to immerse Somali youth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students work on projects together and share them with city council members.

Two schools in New York and Washington state are breaking the traditional high school mold by combining college preparation with career and technical education. Amadou Diallo writes, "Debating whether kids need hands-on training or academic rigor misses the point."

School districts can help students qualify for high-tech careers, regardless of their zip code, through investments in networking and mentoring. Coded by Kids was founded in Philadelphia in 2014 to teach underprivileged students computer skills, such as programming and design. Within five years, Coded by Kids has expanded into New Jersey and Delaware, reaching hundreds of kids. The organization has also launched a student-led design firm, Draft Studios.

Fugees Academy, with schools in Ohio and Georgia, offers specialized and trauma-informed instruction for refugee students. The school aims to get students up to speed with accelerated English instruction.

The University of Nevada at Reno’s DeLaMare Library houses a ‘maker space’ which houses creative tools ranging from whiteboards to laser cutters to microprocessors. It is the library’s hope that this space allows students and the general public to fabricate their ideas and form new, innovative collaborations.

Now in 10 states and 17 countries, the P-TECH program combines high school with internships and free community college classes. In low-income neighborhoods in Newburgh, New York, P-TECH has helped increase earning and career potential and started to close the skills gap.

Kids Who Farm, an initiative co-founded by a 12-year-old in the Phillippines, is working to teach young people how to start micro-farms and grow the waning youth interest in agriculture.

A data analyst who is a Microsoft-certified trainer uploads videos on social media teaching digital technology skills in the Yorùbá language. The videos are free to watch and break the language barrier that arises with most English-only tech information available online.

A digital literacy training program in Nigeria, the Gina Mata, Gina Al'umma, is bridging the country’s technology gender gap by teaching women and girls about the gig economy, STEM, graphic design, storytelling, and how to sell products online.
