    Germany's first refugee center exclusively for LGBTQ immigrants provided safe housing and services to people who otherwise might be subjected to some of the same discrimination and attacks in German shelters that they fled in their home countries. During the 2016 refugee crisis, Schwulenberatung Berlin, an LGBTQ charity, opened the 120-bed shelter with psychotherapists, lawyers, and support staff to help refugees find housing and jobs.     Morris House is the only recovery program in the country that requires people identify as transgender or gender conforming before they enter the program. “About 90 percent of residents saw a decrease in substance use from the month prior to treatment to the last month of their rehabilitation. Additionally, 83 percent of residents received medical treatment, including preventative HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C care, and an additional 89 percent transitioned from use of street-grade unregulated hormones to medical-grade hormone treatment.”

It didn't quite sink in that the surgery was now entirely possible.” Foundations like the Jim Collins Foundation also help cover the costs of surgery. In 2017 the Jim Collins Foundation awarded 13 grants for gender confirmation surgery.
