    Borno State, a state in north-eastern Nigeria, is one of the most terrorized states in north-eastern Nigeria. When women go out to fetch firewood to burn their stoves they risk their livelihood. They can be abducted or raped. To help, the Food and Agriculture Organization launched the Safe Access to Fuel and Energy Project, 50,000 women have received fuel-efficient stoves. The stoves are produced in three regional centers by locals and with locally sourced raw materials like mud and clay.

    A dairy cooperative in Ukraine has brought jobs to farmers in the region and allowed them to work together to sell their milk on the market. An international nonprofit helped the Andriyivka Prosperity cooperative get off the ground. While villagers were skeptical of joining at first, and there are still challenges with operating the cooperative, there are 129 members that sell their milk. “The cooperative has halted the extinction of the village, allowing young people to stay in their homelands and have jobs and a livelihood,” says one of the villagers.

This water conservation project is not being implemented throughout the rest of the country.

  • The day Bluetooth brought a cardiologist to every village in Cameroon

    A severe cardiologist shortage, especially in rural areas, led to the creation of the Cardiopad, an electrocardiogram device that allows local doctors to easily perform examinations and use Bluetooth to transfer them to cell phones to send to a cardiologist based in another hospital. The device is used in about 100 Cameroonian hospitals and 150 are used abroad in Comoros, Gabon, Guinea, Kenya, and Nepal, among other countries. Since 2016, 9,800 remote examinations have been carried out with the Cardiopad. The telemedicine capabilities fight medical deserts by bringing cardiologists to remote villages.
