    YOYO Youth Vocational Training and Recreational Center is a vocational school in Zone 3 of Bidibidi, the largest refugee settlement in the world. The school is a product of a partnership amongst organizations such as UNHCR and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency in order to help refugees obtain additional education and learn skills to be able to sustain themselves one day. Students testify to how the institute has changed their lives.

    World Relief Durham hosts a summer program for kids. Like other summer programs, it is meant to reduce summer learning loss—but this is specifically for children from forcibly displaced families. The kids face unique challenges in school and in society, often having been witness to traumatic experiences, so in this program they take lessons, play games, and work with community volunteers to let them just be kids. The program started with 25 participants in 2017 and grew to serve 150 children in 2019.

  • The South Sudanese Refugee Dance Group with a Mission

    In 2018 Bidibidi's Got Talent crowned the dance group Burn dem squad as best in the entire settlement. The group was founded by a few teenage boys and is now made up of 15 members aged 17-19. The founders say that they use dance as a way to make friends and to "help fellow refugees deal with trauma from the war, raise awareness about social ills and promote peacebuilding between the diverse ethnic groups in the settlement and the host community".

    Art therapy allows minors in detention to cope with stress and trauma. In “Uncaged Art: Tronillo Children’s Detention Camp,” an art exhibition housed at the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens at the University of Texas at El Paso, displays works of art created by unaccompanied minors detained at the US-Mexico border. Nonprofits like Annunciation House and the International Rescue Committee are also using art to make migrant shelters more accommodating to the needs—and stresses—of children’s experiences.

  • The Cities Funding Legal Defense for Immigrants

One strategy, a legal counsel program called New York Family Immigrant Unity Project, has proven so successful that it now has 19 other counties in states like Colorado and Georgia participating in their network. Beyond that, these public defense projects often comprise of both public and private dollars and are all working for the right (not guaranteed by the US Constitution) to have access to legal counsel during immigration proceedings.
