Restrictions - like not allowing restaurants to serve water unless it’s asked for and barring residents from watering their yards during the day – have helped. Diversifying where the city gets their water from and investing in water-saving infrastructure, like lining Imperial Valley canals with concrete to prevent water from seeping into the earth, growing desalination capabilities, and adding more capacity to the reservoir, have also helped diversity and save water.

The nonprofit owns an 8-unit residence for youth 18-24 who have aged out of the foster care system or are at risk for becoming homeless. The home provides a safe and supportive option where youth can transition to adulthood and have access to help navigating systems, like education and employment. The organization has begun to provide mental health care services as well, with two therapists on staff. The rent is subsidized by the government, which makes it a more affordable option, and additional residences are being planned.

The airline worked with the union to set up vaccine clinics at its major hubs and offered incentives to employees who got vaccinated. Incentives, like extra pay or vacation days that declined over time until they expired, led the majority of employees to get vaccinated, and the mandate proved to be the final push that was needed.

Shade from trees acts as a thermal buffer during extreme heat and cold and a lack of trees disproportionately impacts low-income communities. The program surpassed its goal by planting trees in parks and along streets, as well as by buying small plots of land to create “pocket parks” with trees providing shade. The city subsidized trees for homeowners, who were banned from cutting down mature, healthy trees on their properties, and ran education programs to increase resident buy-in.

The RapidSMS program provides mobile phones to connect pregnant women, community health workers (CHWs), ambulances, and hospitals. CHWs enter data into phones to track all pregnant women, monitor prenatal care, and identify women at risk of complications. The free platform also allows pregnant women to send a text message to their CHW, who can alert an ambulance to be dispatched to even the most remote regions and give hospitals advanced notice of the women’s arrival. The system has been so effective in improving health outcomes that the government is looking to use it for other medical issues like malaria.
